Sacramento News & Review's annual College Essay Contest is back and wants to help the Class of 2019. Seniors can email a 650-word essay on the topic of their choice to collegeessay@newsreview.com. You can even submit your college essay. Entries can be sent in a Word document, PDF, or copied/pasted into the body of the email. Just make sure the subject box says "College Essay Contest." First prize is $2,000, second is $1,000, and third is $500. Deadline for submission is May 7 at 5:00 p.m.

Speech Contest The Rotary Club is holding its annual speech contest for students in grades 9 through 12. The theme of the contest is “Be the Inspiration.” There are three levels of competition. The first is the club level, followed by the semifinals, and then the finals. The deadline to apply is February 28. The club level contest will be held on March 6. You may have heard of Mike Rowe from one of his TV shows, “Dirty Jobs” or “Somebody’s Gotta Do It.” He’s a tireless advocate of skilled labor and training in the building trades. Every senior should apply for Elk Grove Regional Scholarship Foundation scholarships. There are more than 150 scholarships up for grabs for EGUSD students. Every year, many scholarships are not awarded because no one applies for them. The EGRSF application process is a bit cumbersome, but well worth the effort. The College Board – the folks that administer the PSAT, SAT, and CSS Profile (among others) is launching a new scholarship program set to roll out in December. Beginning with the Class of 2020, the College Board will award $5 million per year in scholarships.
